On 1 February 2012, Marlborough Boys’ College’s new Year Nine students commenced with the College, starting a significant journey through their secondary schooling.
The new students were welcomed by the College’s Year 13 students and Year 12 leadership group with a Powhiri on the College’s front field. Led by the Prefect team, the new students were welcomed with a vibrant and bold haka as they were welcomed onto the grounds.
The new students have spent the day undergoing orientation of the school, getting to know senior students, and the Prefect team aswell as having an afternoon partaking in sport and cultural activities which were organized by the College prefects.
Head Boy Jack Keown says that “It’s exciting to see so many fresh faces excited about the next step in their education. I look forward to meeting the young men over the coming weeks and I am sure the prefects and the rest of the student body will make them feel welcome”.
After the Powhiri, parents and students gathered in the College hall for refreshments and the announcement of form classes.
The Year 9 students have settled in well to the College and are enjoying the opportunity to meet with Prefects and senior students, before the whole school resumes on Friday 3 February 2012.
Principal Wayne Hegarty says that the new students “Have had excellent support in the induction from the Year 12 leadership group who have been absolutely superb”.
“We can see that these boys have incredible potential and have outlined the high expectations that we have for them”.

The Marlborough Two Day Cycling Tour again attracted one hundred and eighty riders over the 10th and 11th of September. The race was a nationally recognised event with the New Zealand selectors again in attendance.
Callum Saunders was the stand out of the weekend winning the King of the Mountains, the Sprint and the Overall Yellow General Classification jersey in the U17 grade. It was the first time a clean sweep of titles had been attained by a rider in tour history. Support came from Will Hart, Nick Blakiston, Quinn Karwowski and Max Bicknell. Will Hart also offered up his wheel as well for Quinn when he had punctured in the Road Race.
In the U20 field Peter Crampton finished in second place in the King of the Mountains and alongside Leatham Landon-Lane picked up seven top ten placings.
The MBC representatives at Tauranga.
On August 26 a group of Marlborough Boys College and Marlborough Girls College students set off for Tauranga for the Ngā Manu Kōrero Nationals.
The group stayed at Waikari Marae and everyone gained weight from the massive meals.
The students meet up with four Nelson High Schools and Motueka representing the ‘Top of the South’ region. Students spent many hours doing kapa haka practice ready for the lifting of the ‘Mauri’. The ‘Mauri’ is a carved waka that is over a metre in length which will travel through QCC to MBC and MGC before being taken to Nelson where it will rest until next year Nationals.
Members of the public frequently commented on how well-dressed and pleasant the students from Marlborough were. Two Australian teachers were ‘blown away’ by a haka performed by the students at Huka Falls.
I look forward to seeing the Marlborough students in action after all ideas and skills they have gained from this experience.

The Combined Colleges production of Footloose played to very good houses and great reviews. Five months of gradual preparation and rehearsal paid off for the 80 students involved in the drama, music, dance and song of a large show. Behind the scenes, another group helped with the technology and sales for the show.
